Donation Steps: 5 easy steps to donate a computer and equipment
For most donations, if you are within driving distance of Kramden, you can donate computer equipment. We are located in Durham but a quick drive from the Research Triangle Park, Chapel Hill, Raleigh, Wake Forest, Apex, Cary, Morrisville, Fuquay-Varina, Holly Springs, Angier, Willow Springs, Garner, Smithfield, Carrboro. Because we are a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, your equipment donations are fully tax-deductible.
- Check our specification requirements below – Ensure that your equipment can be accepted and reused.
- Worried about your data? – Kramden needs hard drives so please consider including your desktop/laptop hard drive with your donation. While we do not guarantee data removal, we conforWe take all reasonable steps to delete data off of your data storage before our refurbishing process. For more detailed information on how we wipe data, consult our process here.
- Make an appointment to drop your donation – Donations are accepted by appointment only. To make an appointment, please call 919-293-1133 . We ask that donors be responsible for transportation of the equipment to our facility. Our address is: 4915 Prospectus Drive, Suite J, Durham, NC, 27713 For larger donations, we can suggest low-cost transportation in the local area. Small items, such as thumb drives and RAM can be mailed or dropped off at our office Monday through Friday 9:00 AM- 5:00 PM, or at any of our Kramden Events.
- Consider a cash donation along with your equipment – Please consider a monetary donation to help with our refurbishing costs. The average cost for us to refurbish a computer and award it to a child in need is $65. Your gift will help us put your equipment donation to good use.
- Print and fill out Kramden’s Equipment Donation Receipt – Fill out the receipt prior to arriving to make the donation process faster.

- PCs and Laptops – less than 5 years old (800 MHz or higher processor, not stripped of parts; laptops with batteries/power supplies)
- PC and Laptop Hard Drives – 30GB and larger
- LCD Monitors – any size, with power supply
- USB Flash Drives – 128 MB and above
- Laptops – 800 MHz or higher
- PC Memory – 256 MB and above
- PC Speakers – with cables and power supplies
- PC Keyboards and Mice – USB connectors
- PC Video cards, Ethernet cards
Additional items for resale to support our programs
- Routers, switches, or hubs (particularly Gigabit switches)
- Apple® computers and laptops in working order, less than 4 years old
- New printer cartridges
- New laser printer toner in original boxes

- Large plastic bins/totes for storage

All donations to Kramden Institute that meet our requirements are eligible for a tax deduction to the full extent of the law. A tax donation receipt will be provided at the time of donation. Kramden Institute has been issued a 501(c)(3) certification from the U.S. Internal Revenue Service as a charitable, not-for-profit organization. Kramden Institute can issue acknowledgments for tax purposes to represent the donation of equipment at fair market value. The donor is responsible for determining his/her own fair market value. By donating equipment to Kramden Institute, Inc., the donor acknowledges that this is an unconditional donation and transfers to Kramden all rights for use of the equipment and any data that might be contained therein. Kramden will use the equipment as it sees fit which may include; refurbishment for educational and charitable purposes, use for spare parts, donation to a third party, scrap, recycling or resale to raise funds to support Kramden activities.
While Kramden uses general procedures to reformat and/or wipe data from hard drives from all donated equipment, it cannot guarantee the removal of information from contributed computers and assumes no responsibility for the removal of any information from contributed computers.
