How We Refurbish
Most computers have their hard drives reformatted and wiped clean in a three-pass process meeting DoD standards.* However, most PCs donated to Kramden have had their hard drives removed.
All are generally tested for working parts, and non-working parts are
replaced.
Typically, we bring the computers up to the following standards:
- Processor: Pentium IV or Higher with a speed of at least 1GHz or equivalent AMD, etc.
- At least 512 MB or RAM, at least 20 GB hard drive with an average of over 30 GB.
- Working CD ROM drive.
- Working ethernet card.
We reformat the hard drive and install Windows XP Professional operating system. We perform a 3-pass wipe of the hard drive before installing the operating system. As members of the Microsoft Approved Refurbishers Program, we are able to obtain affordable copies of this operating system. Then we test, clean and analyze the system. Drivers are added, as needed. The modem and network port is tested. All hardware goes through final tests.
Software is added. We have amassed a suite of freeware programs including OpenOffice, Firefox web browser, Internet Explorer 7.0, ZipGenius, Microsof Security Essentials Antivirus, and others. The software is loaded and tested and a Kramden User Manual (in English and Spanish versions) is also loaded onto the desktop.
A keyboard, mouse, cables and 15-17" lcd monitor is cleaned and added to each computer.

Please Note: Kramden Institute cannot guarantee the removal or disposition of any data that remains on the Hard Drives or other storage devices of donated computers and is thus not liable for those data or subsequent use or handling. The equipment donor is solely responsible for the removal of data from their computers prior to donation, and as a term of donation will not hold Kramden Institute liable for any use of the data subsequent to donation.
